First on stage was Andrew Liles, who performed solo with one main desk
and a batch of effects pedals, backed by macabre footage of airline disasters,
a theme also apparent on the packaging of his CD. Building up a dense
wall of dark ambient noise, he gradually introduced jarring yet atmospheric
bursts of harsh squealing feedback and rhythm, creating an effect reminiscent
of the work of Stratvm Terror. At times the climactic feedback roar sounded
uncannily like a jet taking off, and the eruptions of painful power electronic
chaos accompanying the explosions on screen produced a thoroughly chilling
effect. I was delighted to discover a talented new UK artist working in
such a dark vein, and look forward to hearing more of his work.
