Carl Stokes

Carl is the founding member of Cancer, a British death/thrash metal band formed in Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire in 1988. Over the course of their career they released five full-length albums, including one for the major label East West, and broke up twice (in 1996 and 2006). Cancer reformed in September 2013.

Liles has remixed the Cancer song ‘Witch Hunt’ from their classic album ‘To The Gory End’. This appears on the FCKWIT E.P.


1.) WHICH RECORD HAS HAD THE MOST PROFOUND INFLUENCE ON YOU?
Vol 4 Black Sabbath the heaviest riffs I had ever heard at the time.

2.) HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SPEND A WEEK RECORDING/PLAYING/CREATING?
I don’t have set hours of work just when I have things to do or feel the urge, but usually 15 – to 20 hours a week.

3.) WHICH OF YOUR OWN CREATIONS IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
‘Black Faith’ by Cancer, this was our lets do something different album. We were very proud of it but most of our fans hate it.

4.) WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST REGRET?
I regret nothing, otherwise I wouldn’t be at this point in life. One thing I do know, It’s better to regret something you have done than something that you haven’t, Saaaaataaaannnn….

5.) WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
Learn psychology.

6.) OTHER THAN FRIENDS AND FAMLY WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHERISHED POSSESSION?
1972 Ludwig Super Classic drum kit that my wife bought me, it’s white.

7.) TELL ME THREE OF YOUR HEROES/HEROINES?
Billy Cobham, Kate Bush, Rob Halford.

8.) WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?
Anglesey, Wales.

9.) IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE YOUR ART WHAT OCCUPATION DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE DOING?
Butcher….

10.) IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT YOU HAVE NEVER CONVEYED IN AN INTERVIEW BEFORE WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
I once shit myself on a day out in Birmingham and had to throw my pants away in a bin. Not my best moment but memorable.
