Darren is a prolific English experimental/drone musician. He is known for his solo works and his work in Ora and Monos. He has released dozens of recordings primarily on CDR on his own label, Fungal.
Liles recorded the collaboration album ‘WITHOUT SEASON’ with Darren in 2005 which has recently been reissued on CDR via the Fungal label.
1.) WHICH RECORD HAS HAD THE MOST PROFOUND INFLUENCE ON YOU?
Two Records actually: T G – Second Annual Report + Fad Gadget – Fireside Favourites.
2.) HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SPEND A WEEK RECORDING/PLAYING/CREATING?
Nowadays, I don’t do a great deal of recording etc, but I like to do my artwork when I can. My recording equipment is faulty at the moment. Years ago I would be more busy with the music creation, recording etc. Once I get my equipment mended I will get back into it.
3.) WHICH OF YOUR OWN CREATIONS IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
My Creations: I really like an album I did called “TIME LAG” – This was done in one day and probably sounds like it took me ages, editing etc. It was recorded direct to mini-disc in the order it runs too. I like it.
4.) WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST REGRET?
Nothing.
5.) WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I listen to music a lot I must admit and am always buying new things. Also, I do a volunteer gardening job at a local park, which is great any time of the year.
6.) OTHER THAN FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHERISHED POSSESSION?
Believe it or not I had given a really good guillotine a long time ago and I used it so much on my Gnome, Nil & Fungal releases and any artwork I do.
7.) TELL ME THREE OF YOUR HEROES/HEROINES?
I admire some artists I like, but not really heroes / heroines.
8.) WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?
By the sea!
9.) IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE YOUR ART WHAT OCCUPATION DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE DOING?
Some sort of outdoor work, maybe gardening or something like that would be really nice.
10.) IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT YOU HAVE NEVER CONVEYED IN AN INTERVIEW BEFORE WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
I like to do impersonations and when I was very young I would do various characters to the amusement of my mother.
